Founder of the Seljuk Empire (1037–1063)
A Turkoman chieftain who swept out of the Central Asian steppes and built an empire that stretched from Persia to Baghdad. Tughril didn't overthrow the Abbasid Caliphate — he neutered it, turning the caliph into a puppet while seizing command of the Islamic world's armies and borders.
After the deaths of earlier Seljuk leaders, Tughril united the Turkoman tribes and was declared sultan in 1037. Three years later, his forces crushed the Ghaznavids at the Battle of Dandanqan in 1040, ending their control of Khorasan and opening Persia. He took Nishapur, then Ray, then Isfahan — each in turn made capital as the empire pushed west. In 1055, answering an invitation from Caliph al-Qa'im, Tughril entered Baghdad, expelled the Buyids, and formalized a new order: the caliph kept spiritual authority, Tughril took everything else.
