Great Khatun of the Mongul Empire
She held the Mongol Empire together for five years between khans — a widow who refused to step aside until her son took the throne.
Töregene became Great Khatun when her husband Ögedei Khan died in 1241. Rather than yield power to another claimant, she declared herself regent and held the empire through five years of maneuvering and delay. Her aim was singular: to secure the succession for her eldest son Güyük. In 1246 he was elected khan, and her regency ended. She died that same year.
