Tomislav Nikolić was born 15 February 1952 in Bajčetina, a village near Kragujevac, and spent years as a member of parliament for the far-right Serbian Radical Party. He served as Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia from 1998 to 1999 and of FR Yugoslavia from 1999 to 2000, rising to deputy leader of SRS in 2003. In 2008, he split with party leader Vojislav Šešelj over the question of EU accession - Nikolić now favored it, Šešelj did not - and walked out to form the Serbian Progressive Party, taking several members with him. His fifth presidential campaign, in 2012, succeeded: he defeated Boris Tadić in the run-off and held the presidency until 2017.
