Timothy James Walz was born April 6, 1964, in West Point, Nebraska, graduated from Butte High School in 1982, joined the Army National Guard, worked in a factory, then earned a degree from Chadron State College before moving to Minnesota in 1996 to teach social studies and coach football. In 2006 he defeated six-term Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht to win Minnesota's 1st congressional district, served six terms in the House - rising to ranking member of Veterans Affairs - then won the governor's mansion in 2018. His first term was defined by managing the George Floyd protests and COVID-19; his second by a two-year Democratic trifecta that passed felony voting rights restoration, cannabis legalization, trans refuge protections, universal gun background checks, abortion codification, and free college tuition for low-income families. Vice President Kamala Harris picked him as her running mate on August 6, 2024; they lost to Donald Trump and JD Vance. He planned a third gubernatorial run until investigations uncovered extensive fraud in state-funded social services under his watch, prompting him to withdraw and announce on January 28, 2026, that he would "never r
