About this person
Born 10 November 1945 in Houaphanh province, Thongloun Sisoulith studied in Leningrad and Moscow before returning to teach for the Pathet Lao during the Laotian Civil War. He entered government in 1987 as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, a post he held until 1992, then cycled through other roles before becoming deputy prime minister in 2001. Named Foreign Affairs minister in 2006, he drew the label "moderate" from the U.S. embassy in Vientiane and worked to warm Laos-United States relations - efforts welcomed by Senator Jim Webb in 2009 and Hillary Clinton in 2010 - while also strengthening ties with China and Vietnam. As prime minister from 2016, he launched anti-corruption campaigns. In 2021 he became general secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and seventh president of Laos.
