Biography

About

Born around 759 into the Byzantine aristocracy, Theophanes served in the court of Emperor Leo IV the Khazar before leaving that world behind for monastic life. He attended the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, which had restored the veneration of icons after decades of controversy. When Leo V the Armenian revived iconoclasm — the imperial campaign against religious images — Theophanes resisted. The emperor had him imprisoned. He was released shortly before his death in 817 or 818, and both the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches venerate him as a confessor on 12 March.
