About this person

Thaksin Shinawatra founded Advanced Info Service and Shin Corporation in 1987, becoming one of Thailand's richest men. He launched Thai Rak Thai Party in 1998 and swept to power in 2001, the first democratically elected prime minister to serve a full term and win re-election in 2005. His government expanded healthcare and infrastructure, but also declared a "war on drugs" that killed 72 people and took a hard line on the southern insurgency. When he sold over a billion dollars in corporate shares tax-free, the Yellow Shirt movement erupted, accusing him of corruption and autocracy. A military coup removed him in September 2006; his party was banned and he fled into 15 years of exile. He was sentenced to two years for abuse of power and stripped of his police rank, but kept pulling strings through the People's Power Party, Pheu Thai, and the Red Shirts - his sister Yingluck ruled from 2011 to 2014, his daughter Paetongtarn briefly in 2024. He returned to Thailand in August 2023 under the alias "Tony Woodsome," went straight to custody, received parole and pardon in 2024, then landed back in prison in 2025.
