Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo was born 5 June 1942 and trained at military school in Zaragoza, Spain. Under his uncle Francisco Macías Nguema's presidency, he held several posts including director of Black Beach prison, notorious for human rights violations. In 1979 he ousted Macías in a military coup and took control as president and chairman of the Supreme Military Council. The country returned to nominal civilian rule in 1982; in 1987 Obiang founded the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea, the sole legal party until 1992 and still the vehicle of virtually all governing power.
