Takijirō Ōnishi was born on 2 June 1891 and rose through the ranks of the Imperial Japanese Navy to admiral. During World War II, as Japan's position deteriorated, he devised and implemented the kamikaze program - formalizing suicide attacks as military strategy. The tactic he fathered sent thousands of young pilots to deliberate death. On 16 August 1945, the day after Japan's surrender, Ōnishi died.
