She's the voice that launched Girls' Generation into the stratosphere in 2007, then proved a K-pop idol could build a solo empire without leaving the group behind - racking up chart-topping singles, over a million albums sold, and a string of number-ones that kept coming through 2022.

About this person

Kim Tae-yeon debuted with Girls' Generation in August 2007, riding the group to become one of South Korea's best-selling acts and a worldwide K-pop force. She spent years in SM Entertainment's ecosystem - subunits, supergroups, soundtrack work for dramas like Hong Gil-dong and Beethoven Virus in 2008. In 2015 she broke out solo with the EP I, its title track hitting number one on the Gaon Digital Chart. The hits kept stacking: "Rain" in 2016, the EP Why, then her 2017 debut album My Voice with top-five singles "Fine" and "11:11". She pushed into Japan in 2018 with "Stay", released the EP Voice in 2019, then dropped Purpose that same year anchored by the number-one "Four Seasons". Her third album INVU arrived in 2022 with another chart-topper and two more top-tens. By 2021 she'd moved over a million physical albums and twenty million digital singles as a solo act, collected armfuls of Golden Disc and Seoul Music Awards, and landed a regular spot on Amazing Saturday while the catalog kept growing.
