About
According to Ottoman tradition, Suleyman Shah was the son of Kaya Alp and father of Ertuğrul, placing him two generations before Osman I founded the empire in 1299. Early genealogies disputed the line — some named Gündüz Alp as Ertuğrul's father instead. In 1214 he succeeded his father as bey and led a 50,000-strong tribe westward under pressure from Mongol invasion. After migrating to the North Caucasus, thousands of Kayis settled in Erzincan and Ahlat that same year, while other groups scattered across Diyarbakir, Mardin, and Urfa.
