About this person
Born April 23, 1950, McCurry worked as a freelance photojournalist before that single frame in a Pakistani refugee camp changed everything. National Geographic ran the portrait in 1985 and returned to it again and again - the girl's gaze became shorthand for an entire war. He joined Magnum Photos in 1986 and continued shooting assignments across conflict zones and distant cultures, twice winning first place at World Press Photo (1985, 1992) and collecting Magazine Photographer of the Year from the National Press Photographers Association. The Royal Photographic Society gave him its Centenary Medal. Decades on, he remains the man who proved a portrait could carry more weight than a thousand words of dispatch.
