Stanisław Leszczyński was installed as King of Poland in 1704 by Swedish forces during the Great Northern War, only to lose the throne five years later when his backer Charles XII fell at Poltava and Russia restored Augustus II. He retreated to a minor German principality, then Alsace, where his daughter Marie married Louis XV of France in 1725.
