About this person
Sosigenes worked in Alexandria during the 1st century BC, when the city was the intellectual center of the ancient world. Caesar summoned him to Rome in the mid-40s BC to solve a political and agricultural crisis: the Roman calendar had become so misaligned that harvest festivals fell in the wrong seasons. Sosigenes designed what became the Julian calendar, introducing the 365-day year with a leap day every four years. His system governed Europe for over sixteen centuries. Almost nothing else about his life survives.
