Juana Inés de Asbaje y Ramírez de Santillana was born 12 November 1648 and took vows as a Hieronymite nun, becoming Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Inside the convent she composed poetry, philosophy, and music through the Baroque period, studied science, and wrote with enough brilliance that contemporaries called her "The Mexican Phoenix" and "The Phoenix of America". Her work made her a central figure in the Spanish Golden Age alongside Juan Ruiz de Alarcón and Garcilaso de la Vega "el Inca", and she is now considered one of the most important female writers in Spanish-language literature and Mexican literature. She died 17 April 1695, but the arguments over what she represents - saint, nationalist icon, free-speech martyr, symbol of women's rights and sexual diversity - have outlasted the century that contained her.
