A Romanian who held the world No. 1 ranking for 64 weeks and won the French Open and Wimbledon, then saw her career severed by a doping ban in 2022. The suspension was later cut to nine months, but by the time she returned in 2024, the damage was done - she retired in 2025.

About this person

Simona Halep was born 27 September 1991 and came up through the junior ranks as a French Open champion. She cracked the top 50 at the end of 2011, then broke through in 2013 by winning her first six WTA titles in one season - the first to do that since Steffi Graf in 1986. Three major finals followed without the trophy: the 2014 French Open, the 2017 French Open, the 2018 Australian Open. She finally broke through at Roland Garros in 2018, then beat Serena Williams to take Wimbledon in 2019. For seven years straight she stayed inside the top 10, finishing each season in the top four, and twice closed the year ranked No. 1. In October 2022 she tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended; the four-year ban was cut to nine months in February 2024. She played the Miami Open that spring, but retired from tennis in 2025.
