Born January 1, 1960, Tsukamoto came up through Japanese independent film and in 1989 released Tetsuo: The Iron Man, a lo-fi fever dream of transformation that became the defining work of Japanese Cyberpunk. He followed it with Tetsuo II: Body Hammer in 1992 and closed the trilogy with Tetsuo: The Bullet Man in 2009, while building a wider filmography - Tokyo Fist in 1995, Bullet Ballet in 1998, A Snake of June in 2002, Vital in 2004, Kotoko in 2011, Killing in 2018. He stars in nearly everything he makes and has crossed over to act for Scorsese, Miike, and Anno. The cult following holds in Japan and abroad, the influence traceable in Tarantino, the Wachowskis, Fincher, Aronofsky - filmmakers who learned something from the way he fused human tissue with machine dread.
