About

Born 28 September 1947 into the Sheikh family of Tungipara, Hasina had little presence in politics until her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh's first president, was assassinated in 1975. She spent years in exile before returning in 1981 to lead the Awami League against military rule. Alongside rival Khaleda Zia, she helped drive the 1990 mass uprising that restored parliamentary democracy.
