Born 23 September 1951, Shehbaz Sharif entered the Punjab Assembly in 1988 and the National Assembly in 1990, when his brother led a military-backed alliance that won power — support later ruled illegal by the Supreme Court in 2012. He became Punjab's chief minister in February 1997, but the 1999 coup sent the family into Saudi exile for years. He returned in 2007 and reclaimed the Punjab post after the 2008 election, then again in 2013, holding it until defeat in 2018.
