About this person
Born 29 July 1949, Arif-ur-Rehman Alvi entered politics in 1979 with Jamaat-e-Islami before breaking away to co-found the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. He spent decades in opposition until winning a National Assembly seat from Karachi in 2013, then again in 2018 from NA-247 Karachi South-II. That same year his party nominated him for president; he defeated Fazal-ur-Rehman and Aitzaz Ahsan in the vote, resigned his Assembly seat, and took the oath on 9 September 2018, succeeding Mamnoon Hussain. He served until March 2024, a span that covered some of the most fractious chapters in recent Pakistani governance.
