In 1993, he formed Black Grape with former Happy Mondays dancer Bez.

In 2005, Ryder collaborated with Gorillaz on "Dare", which peaked at number one on the UK singles chart in September 2005, becoming the band's only UK number one single. Ryder is known for his distinctive sprechgesang and lyricism.
