Lavrov graduated from MGIMO in 1972 and started his career in Sri Lanka, picking up Sinhala and Dhivehi along the way. He spent much of the 1980s at the Soviet UN mission in New York, then rose through the Foreign Ministry's international organizations department before becoming a deputy minister in 1992. As Russia's UN ambassador from 1994 to 2004, he built his reputation during the Kosovo War and Iraq invasion - assertive, unbudging, always ready to argue Moscow's corner. Putin made him foreign minister in 2004, and he's held the post ever since, the constant architect and explainer of a foreign policy that keeps the world's attention fixed on Russia.
