An Ottoman sultan who tried to drag an empire into modernity and was murdered for it. The Janissaries — the elite troops he sought to reform — deposed him in 1807, installed his cousin, then sent killers to finish the job.

Biography

About

Selim III took the throne in 1789 as sultan of the Ottoman Empire, a reformer with Enlightenment ambitions in a state built on old military power. His efforts to modernize ran headlong into the Janissaries, the empire's entrenched soldier class who saw change as betrayal. In 1807 they overthrew him, threw him in prison, and placed his cousin Mustafa IV on the throne. A year later, assassins arrived and killed Selim. He was forty-six.
