Something wrong?Austria's youngest-ever chancellor - twice - left office at 35 under a corruption inquiry, then walked straight into a job with Peter Thiel. For a few years he was the world's youngest head of government, credited with modernising conservatism in Europe, criticised for arrogance and haste, undone by scandal.

About this person
Sebastian Kurz joined the youth wing of Austria's People's Party in 2003 and climbed fast: state secretary at 25, foreign minister at 27. In May 2017 he took over the party and ran for chancellor on a platform of reform and immigration control after the refugee crisis, winning in a landslide that fall. His first government - a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party - delivered on campaign pledges but earned him a reputation for uncooperative, hasty leadership. The Ibiza affair collapsed that coalition in 2019 and cost him Parliament's support. He returned after a snap election, this time partnering with the Greens, but COVID lockdowns and a corruption inquiry ended his second chancellorship in October 2021. He stayed on as party chair - the "shadow chancellor" - until December, when he quit politics entirely and joined Peter Thiel's operation as a global strategist.
