Beni Mosabu was born in Meudon on 28 November 1995, the son of Congolese immigrants. He adopted the pseudonym SDM and entered the French rap scene, carving out space in a crowded field by letting the initials do the work. The choice to operate behind a cipher rather than a given name became part of the appeal.
