About this person

Scott Bessent graduated from Yale in 1984 with a political science degree and worked his way into Soros Fund Management by 1991, eventually running its London office. In September 1992 he was part of the team that earned SFM $1 billion shorting the pound during the sterling crisis, and in 2013 he pulled off another $1.2 billion win against the Japanese yen. He left Soros in 2015 to start his own firm, Key Square Group, then pivoted to politics as an economic advisor and major donor for Donald Trump's 2024 campaign. Trump nominated him for Treasury Secretary in November 2024, the Senate confirmed him 68 - 29 in January 2025, and he was sworn in as the 79th secretary the next day. He's the highest-ranking LGBTQ official in U.S. history and the first openly gay Cabinet member confirmed under a Republican president.
