Palin climbed from Wasilla city council in 1992 to mayor in 1996, then chaired Alaska's Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in 2003. At 42, she became the state's first female governor in 2006. Two years later McCain tapped her for VP - the first woman on a Republican national ticket - and the media storm over her experience and public image defined the race they'd lose to Obama-Biden. Legal fees from ethics fights drove her July 2009 resignation. She pivoted to the Tea Party movement, stumped for candidates including Trump in 2016, hosted two TV shows, provided Fox News commentary through 2015, and published Going Rogue, which sold over a million copies. In 2022 she twice lost Alaska's at-large House seat to Democrat Mary Peltola.
