About this person

Abacha seized control following a palace coup in 1993, the final successful military takeover in Nigerian history. His rule brought political assassinations, summary executions of dissidents, and what observers described as total disregard for human rights. The 1995 execution of environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa turned Nigeria into a pariah state in international relations. Alongside the violence, Abacha and his family allegedly moved between $2 billion and $5 billion out of Nigeria, hiding the funds in Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the UK, and the US. He died on 8 June 1998, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar succeeded him - a transition that led to the Nigerian Fourth Republic a year later.
