Ahmadu Bello was born Ahmadu Rabah on 12 June 1910, a member of the Sokoto Caliphate dynasty. He tried for the sultanate first, and when that didn't work he turned to politics. Elected to the regional legislature, he rose to minister and then in 1954 became premier of northern Nigeria - a post he would hold alone, the region's first and only. He led the Northern People's Congress, the ruling party drawn largely from the Hausa-Fulani elite, and through it he commanded national affairs into the 1960s. On 15 January 1966 he was assassinated, a conservative statesman cut down in the coup that broke the country open.
