She closed the monarchy chapter. Mason became Barbados's first president in 2021 after the island voted to drop the British Crown - a shift she oversaw first as governor-general, then as the head of state who made the republic real.

Born 17 January 1949, Mason broke ground early: first woman admitted to the bar in Barbados, first woman on the country's Supreme Court, first magistrate appointed ambassador. She served as a High Court judge in Saint Lucia and on Barbados's Court of Appeal, chaired the CARICOM commission on regional integration, and joined the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal. In 2017 she was appointed the eighth governor-general, taking office 8 January 2018. Three years later, on 20 October 2021, Parliament elected her president. On 30 November 2021 she took the oath as Barbados became a republic, the first person to hold the office. She served until 2025.
