Sándor Petőfi

Born Petrovics on New Year's Day 1823, Petőfi became Hungary's national poet by his mid-twenties. A liberal revolutionary, he emerged as a key figure when the Hungarian Revolution erupted in 1848, his words galvanizing a movement that escalated into a full war for independence from the Austrian Empire. He likely died at the Battle of Segesvár on 31 July 1849, one of the conflict's final engagements — though his fate was never confirmed. He was twenty-six.
