US Army general (1919–2006)
Samuel William Koster was a career officer in the United States Army. Hailing from rural Iowa, he graduated West Point in 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and attained the rank of major general. Koster is known for his service as commander of the 23rd Infantry Division during the infamous My Lai Massacre in 1968 after the Tet Offensive, later becoming the Superintendent of the US Military Academy at West Point.
