British politician (1824-1898)
Samuel Plimsoll was a British politician and social reformer, now best remembered for having devised the Plimsoll line. Its subsequent introduction in regulation resulted in a reduction of ship sinkings and a corresponding significant improvement in seafarer safety from the late 19th century onwards.
