Tsar of Bulgaria from 997 to 1014
He held the Byzantine Empire at bay for decades, leading armies that reconquered most of the Balkans and forcing Constantinople to measure his power against comets. Samuel died of a heart attack in 1014, two months after a catastrophic defeat — and within four years, Bulgaria collapsed.
Samuel commanded the army under Roman I from 977, effectively ruling the First Bulgarian Empire while the nominal tsar held the throne. He became Tsar outright in 997 and spent nearly every year after in warfare with Basil II and Byzantium, an equal-ambition collision that defined both reigns. Early on he won: his forces took the Serb principality of Duklja in the late 10th century and raided Croatia and Hungary.
