Vatanen started his career in hometown Jyväskylä playing for JYP with whom he won the 2011-12 SM-liiga championship. In 2023, Vatanen won the Swiss National League (NL) championship with Genève-Servette HC, and the Champions Hockey League (CHL) in the 2023-24 season.
