About
Born 15 October 1944, Berisha left cardiology for politics and chaired Albania's Democratic Party starting in 1990. He served as president from 1992 to 1997, then returned as prime minister from 2005 to 2013. In 2021 the Biden Administration barred him from entering the United States under anti-corruption statute, citing ties to organized crime; the UK followed with its own sanctions. That September his party chairman expelled him over the legal trouble, and the 79-year-old launched a nationwide campaign that split the party and won him back the chairmanship in 2022.
