Frankish saint
A Romano-British virgin whose martyrdom became one of medieval Christianity's most elaborated legends, though the historical record offers almost nothing beyond a name and a feast day.
Ursula may have been of royal origin in Roman Britain, but certainty ends there. What survived was veneration: the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion all honor her as a martyr. Her feast day, 21 October, appeared in the pre-1970 General Roman Calendar and persists in some regional observances. The Latin of her name — "little she-bear" — is among the few concrete details that didn't dissolve into legend over the centuries.
