About this person
Ruan Xiaohuan launched the blog ProgramThink in 2009 on Blogger, beyond Beijing's direct reach. Under that handle he published network security guides, methods for bypassing China's internet blockade, political commentary attacking the Chinese Communist Party, and book lists - all while keeping his identity hidden. The blog ran uninterrupted for over a decade. On 10 May 2021, Shanghai police arrested him. In February 2023 the Shanghai No 2 Intermediate People's Court convicted him of inciting subversion of state power and handed down seven years in prison, two years' deprivation of political rights, and a 20,000-yuan property confiscation. His appeal was dismissed in December 2024.
