The last emperor of the Western Roman Empire was a teenager who ruled for ten months, installed by his father, never recognized by the East, and remembered mostly for a mocking nickname that meant "little Augustus."
Romulus was placed on the throne at roughly fifteen by his father Orestes, the magister militum, in October 475 after the usurpation of Julius Nepos. Nepos fled to Dalmatia and kept claiming the title, which meant Romulus was never legitimate in the eyes of Constantinople. In 476, barbarian foederati demanded land in Italy; Orestes refused. Odoacer led them against him, killed Orestes, and deposed the boy on 4 September. Odoacer didn't name a successor — he became King of Italy and acknowledged Zeno in the East instead.
