About this person
Born 24 October 1966, Abramovich rose through the post-Soviet scramble, acquiring oil giant Sibneft in 1995 with Boris Berezovsky for roughly $100 million in the loans-for-shares scheme that minted Russia's oligarch class. He sold it back to the state in 2005 for $13 billion. Between 2000 and 2008 he served as Governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, a remote far-eastern region. His 2003 purchase of Chelsea transformed the Premier League and made him a fixture in London high life. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, his perceived ties to Putin brought sanctions across the West. He was forced to sell the club and now reportedly spends most of his time in Turkey, his fortune - estimated near $9 billion - dispersed through a tangle of offshore entities, many based in Jersey.
