About this person
Roger Mortimer was born 25 April 1287, a marcher lord who built his fortune through marriage to the heiress Joan de Geneville, gaining estates across the Welsh Marches and Ireland. Appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in November 1316, he later led the marcher lords in revolt against Edward II in the Despenser War and landed in the Tower of London in 1322. He escaped to France, where Queen Isabella joined him and became his lover. The pair invaded England, deposed Edward - Mortimer allegedly arranged the king's murder at Berkeley Castle - and for three years Mortimer ruled England as the power behind the throne. Edward III, the deposed king's son, overthrew him in turn. Accused of assuming royal power and other crimes, Mortimer was hanged at Tyburn on 29 November 1330.
