About

Born poor in Odessa in 1898, Malinovsky fought for the Tsar in World War I on two fronts, returned from France after the Revolution, and joined the Reds in the civil war. He volunteered for Spain in the 1930s and came back decorated. When Germany invaded in 1941, he was among the rare Soviet generals who didn't collapse — he held at Stalingrad in December 1942, led the Dnieper–Carpathian offensive that cleared Ukraine, then swept through the Balkans forcing Romania to flip sides, earning his marshal's star from Stalin.
