Visigothic king in Hispania
The last Visigothic king to rule from Toledo, cut down in 711 at the Battle of Guadalete as the Umayyad conquest swept into Hispania. His defeat closed a kingdom — and his widow is believed to have married the Muslim governor who replaced him.
Roderic became king of the Visigoths between 710 and 711, but his claim was contested from the start: he controlled only part of Hispania while a rival, Achila, held the rest. He faced a Basque rebellion and then the Umayyad invasion. In July 711 he met the invaders at the Battle of Guadalete, where he was defeated and killed. His widow, Egilona, is believed to have married Abd al-Aziz ibn Musa, the first Muslim governor of Hispania.
