Roberto Saviano was born 22 September 1979 in Italy. His book Gomorrah used investigative reporting and literary narrative to map the economic reality of the Camorra crime syndicate and organized crime's business operations across Italian territory. The work drew praise from figures like Umberto Eco. In 2006, after denouncing the Casalesi clan in his exposé and again in the piazza of Casal di Principe during a demonstration for legality, he received death threats from the clan. On 13 October 2006, he was placed under strict security protocol. He has lived under police protection ever since.
