Robert Sarah was born on 15 June 1945 in Guinea. He rose through Vatican ranks under John Paul II, serving as secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, then led the Pontifical Council Cor Unum under Benedict XVI. He was made a cardinal in 2010. Four years later he was named prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, the Vatican office that governs how Mass is celebrated. He held the post from 23 November 2014 until 20 February 2021.
