Robert Guiscard was born around 1015 into the Hauteville family in Normandy, sixth son of Tancred de Hauteville and Fressenda — far enough down the line that he inherited nothing. He went south as an adventurer and took what he wanted. By 1057 he'd claimed the County of Apulia and Calabria from his brother, and two years later Pope Nicholas II formalized the fact on the ground: Duke of Apulia and Calabria, Lord of Sicily.
