Born 16 May 1946 in England, Fripp founded King Crimson and became its lone constant as lineups cycled for decades. His compositions leaned on asymmetric rhythms drawn from classical and folk traditions, and he built a tape delay system called Frippertronics, later replaced by a digital rig he named Soundscapes. He invented New Standard Tuning and played sessions for David Bowie, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Blondie, Daryl Hall, and others — his discography now spans more than 700 official releases.
