About this person
Robert Fico entered parliament in 1992 and founded Direction - Social Democracy in 1999. He first took power in 2006 with 29.1% of the vote, lost it in 2010 despite winning the most votes, then surged back in 2012 with a landslide 44.41% - the first absolute majority since 1989. A failed 2014 presidential run was followed by a third term in 2016, but in March 2018 the murder of journalist Ján Kuciak forced his resignation. His party fractured during the opposition years from 2020 to 2023, and Fico pivoted toward populism. The 2023 election brought him back with 22.95% and a fourth Cabinet, cementing his place as the country's most durable political figure.
