British politician and poet (1809-1885)
Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, FRS was a British poet, patron of literature, and politician. A member of the Whig and later Liberal parties, he served in the House of Commons before being elevated to the peerage as Baron Houghton in 1863. Milnes was known for his literary salons, support of contemporary writers, and contributions to Victorian cultural life.
