King of Naples (1409-1480)
A French prince who collected crowns like stamps but couldn't hold most of them — Duke of Anjou, Bar, and Lorraine, briefly King of Naples until ejected, remembered less for statecraft than for retiring to Provence and acquiring the nickname "Good."
Born 16 January 1409 into the House of Valois-Anjou, a cadet branch of the French royal line, René was great-grandson to King John II and spent decades accumulating titles: Duke of Bar from the 1420s, Duke of Lorraine from 1431, Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence from 1434. In 1435 he claimed the throne of Naples and reigned seven years before being driven out in 1442. For most of his adult life he was brother-in-law to Charles VII, close to power but never quite grasping it. He withdrew to Aix-en-Provence, where he lived until his death on 10 July 1480, earning the sobriquet "Good King René"…
